If you cannot find the Google Account tied to your existing Google Analytics account, you will need to follow the following steps to recover the password.

1) Determine if Google Analytics is installed on your website

Before you attempt to recover the account, make sure Google Analytics is installed on your website. The presence of the Google Analytics tracking code on your site helps discover the source of your problem. If Google Analytics is not on your site, there is no previous analytics to use and we will start with a fresh account.

  1. Open your website in a web browser
  2. View the page source for the site. You can do this in every major browser by selecting an option like View page source or similar.
  3. Hit Ctrl + f to find text in the source code. Search for each any of the following, one at a time.
    • ga.js
    • analytics.js
    • UA-
    • GTM
  4. If you find any of this text, you likely have Google Analytics installed
  5. Make note of the UA-XXXXXXXX-X id number - you will need it later

2) Double check any Google Accounts you may have

Okay, you may already have done this, but double check any and all possible Google Accounts tied to your organization. Check personal Google Accounts as well. This can help save a lot of time as the next step can take a while.

3) Prove Site Ownership

Google will need you to create a file in the root of your current site to prove that you own that site and are requesting access.

  1. Create an analytics.txt file with the following information:

    GooGhywoiu9839t543j0s7543uw1 - pls add {INSERT EMAIL ADDRESS} to GA account {INSERT UA-ID} with ‘Manage Users and Edit’ permissions - date {INSERT DATE}.
  2. In the above file, use a Google Account email address that you have access to
  3. Use the UA ID number that you found in Step 1
  4. Make sure to insert today's date at the very end.
  5. Do not use the braces {}, just put the email, UA ID and Date into that string
  6. Add the analytics.txt file to the top-level domain, e.g., example.com/analytics.txt

4) Contact Google

After you have uploaded the analytics.txt file, then fill out and submit the following form: Google Analytics Account Recovery
This process may take 7-14 days to complete.
